An unexpected windfall changed my life this week, and it got me thinking about the financial struggles of Gen Xers. Many of us are not as fortunate as I am, and the recent federal budget changes to capital gains tax and negative gearing have only highlighted the challenges we face. As a Gen X-er, I've spent decades working hard, often with the support of my family, to keep a roof over our heads. The idea of being debt-free and mortgage-free is a dream come true, but it's also a stark reminder of the financial insecurity that many of us Gen Xers face. The budget changes prioritize housing for Millennials, which is understandable, but it also means that Gen Xers like me are being left behind. We've worked just as hard, if not harder, to raise families and build modest homes, but the tax perks of property investors often favor those with larger portfolios. It's frustrating to see the advantages of others while feeling like we're not quite there yet. The reality is that many Gen Xers are staring at ceilings at 3 am, worrying about carrying mortgages into retirement. We've raised families while servicing giant loans and ortho bills, and now we're running the Bank of Mum and Dad while being hammered by our own mortgage and insurances. It's a constant cycle of financial stress and worry. The unexpected windfall I received is a blessing, but it also highlights the unfairness of the system. I've spent decades in the same tax system as people buying their seventh investment property, and watched them get the better deal every time. It's a reminder that sometimes, life just isn't fair, and we have to make the best of what we have. As a Gen X-er, I know exactly what it feels like to work for 42 straight years, only taking four months off with each baby, and still feel one redundancy, illness, or interest rate rise away from trouble. It's a constant battle, and it's why I feel for my kids, who are trying to save a $150K deposit for a shit-box in a soulless housing estate with one road in and no live music. The budget changes may help move the needle a bit, but it's not enough. We need more support and understanding from the government and society as a whole. In the meantime, I'll be enjoying the freedom of being mortgage-free, but I'll also be advocating for change to ensure that Gen Xers like me are not left behind.
