Democrats Vow to Protect Midterms from Trump's Interference (2026)

In a bold declaration, Hakeem Jeffries, the Democratic leader in the U.S. House of Representatives, asserted that his party will thwart any attempts by Donald Trump to manipulate the upcoming midterm elections. This statement, made during a Sunday appearance on CNN’s State of the Union, comes at a time when many are expressing grave concerns over Trump’s recent remarks suggesting that Republicans should take control over the voting process. According to the Constitution, the authority to establish election regulations lies with the states, while Congress holds the power to legislate federal election requirements. Notably, the Constitution does not grant the president any jurisdiction over the administration of elections.

Jeffries did not mince words about Trump’s intentions, stating, "What Donald Trump wants to do is try and nationalize the election – translation: steal it. And we’re not going to let it happen." He highlighted that Democrats have effectively prevented Trump from federalizing the National Guard, countering a nationwide initiative by Republicans aimed at redrawing congressional district boundaries to favor their party's interests.

"This is going to be a free and fair election," Jeffries emphasized, asserting that it will follow the same processes as previous elections, allowing states and localities to manage their own laws.

The Trump administration has been casting doubt on the integrity of this year's elections for several months. They have filed numerous lawsuits against states, alleging improper maintenance of voter rolls. In an unprecedented move, the FBI conducted a raid on the election office in Fulton County, Georgia, last month, seizing ballots and various voter information related to the 2020 election. Despite repeated debunking of fraud allegations in Fulton County, Trump continues to propagate false assertions about the area.

During the CNN interview, Jeffries also condemned Trump’s refusal to retract a racist post shared on his Truth Social account that depicted Barack and Michelle Obama in a derogatory manner. Following widespread backlash, the White House removed the post, attributing its publication to a staffer’s actions.

“He definitively needs to apologize. It was a disgusting video, and the president has been rightly and forcefully criticized by people across the nation,” Jeffries remarked, noting that even some Republicans have begun to show courage in opposing Trump’s troubling behavior.

California Senator Adam Schiff echoed Jeffries’ concerns, stating it was evident that Trump aims to interfere with the electoral process. He raised questions about why Tulsi Gabbard, the director of national intelligence, was present during the Fulton County raid.

"He fully intends to try to subvert the elections. He will do everything he can to suppress the vote. And if he loses, which many Republicans now anticipate given the expected negative outcomes in the midterms, he’s prepared to take actions to overturn the results. We shouldn't doubt that for a moment," Schiff warned during an appearance on ABC’s This Week. "All of this is designed to convey a message: ‘We will not accept an election defeat.’"
