In Ontario, family health teams are facing a critical challenge as they strive to expand access to primary care for all residents. While the government's goal of connecting every Ontarian to a primary care provider is commendable, the teams are struggling to maintain their workforce due to inadequate funding. This issue is particularly acute for nurses and other health professionals, who are leaving in search of higher-paying jobs elsewhere in the healthcare sector. The Association of Family Health Teams of Ontario estimates that nurse practitioners could earn an additional $20,000 or more annually by working in hospitals, and physician assistants could earn an extra $30,000. Despite receiving a 2.7% compensation increase last year, family health teams argue that this is insufficient to attract and retain the necessary professionals. The teams have presented their case to a legislative pre-budget committee, requesting $430 million over five years to address the structural wage gap and release $115 million in already committed workforce funding. However, the province's response has been to invest over $600 million in family health teams this year, as part of a broader $2.1 billion Primary Care Action Plan. While this investment is a step in the right direction, it may not be enough to address the underlying issues. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen whether the government's efforts will be sufficient to ensure that family health teams can continue to provide essential services and care to Ontarians, or if the foundation of primary care will continue to crumble.
